We Ran Our Own AI Calling Agent On 406 Calls To London Businesses. Here Is What Happened.
Before we sell an AI calling agent to anyone, we use it on ourselves. In October 2026 we pointed our own AI agent, Riley, at local businesses in London and California, with the same stack we build for clients: AI voice calls, a WhatsApp assistant, paced cold email and one dashboard that shows every call and message. These are the real numbers, including the parts that did not work.
Softs Leads AI (our own outreach) · Figures as of 15 October 2026
406
AI calls placed across 5 campaigns
227
calls connected to a person or voicemail
8
qualified leads from cold calls
88 / 100
connected in our best London run
The goal
Find out, with real phone calls rather than a demo, whether an AI agent can open a cold conversation with a small business, handle what the person says, and pass on the ones worth a human follow-up, while staying honest that it is an AI.
What we built
Riley calls a list of businesses from a UK or US number, only inside local business hours and on chosen weekdays, a few calls at a time. Every call is recorded, transcribed and given an outcome (answered, voicemail, not interested, callback, qualified lead, do-not-call) in the dashboard. Do-not-call requests are stored and that number is never dialled again.
The same dashboard runs the WhatsApp assistant and the email campaigns, so a lead that replies on any channel lands in one place.
The results
Across 406 calls, 227 connected. Of those, 52 reached voicemail, where Riley left a short message, and 8 became qualified leads: people who described a real problem with missed calls and agreed to a follow-up. 12 were not interested, 12 asked for information only, and 3 asked not to be called again, which was honoured automatically.
Our best run, 100 London businesses on a single day, connected 88 calls. Alongside the calls we sent 100 personalised cold emails, and the inbound assistant handled 28 calls and website voice chats on our own line.
What did not work, and what we changed
179 calls never connected. Most of them came from two runs where our telephony account ran out of credit part-way through, so the dialler kept trying and every call failed. We added a balance check and a one-click "retry the numbers we did not reach" button; the retry connected 89 of 90.
The bigger lesson was the opening line. 140 people hung up within seconds when the first thing they heard was "I am an AI assistant calling from…". We rewrote the opener to ask one short question about their business first and say it is an AI in the next breath, passed the business name to the agent so it is pronounced correctly, and replaced "book a meeting" with "shall I text you a one-minute demo?". That version is what clients get today.
What this means for you
An AI agent will not turn every cold call into a sale, and anyone who promises that is guessing. What it does reliably is make every call, never forget a follow-up, log exactly what was said, respect opt-outs, and show you the numbers so you can improve the script week by week. On inbound calls, where the caller already wants something, it simply makes sure nobody rings out to voicemail.
